A very interesting visualization of our place in the cosmos was produced by an astronomer in the university of Hawai.
Brent Tully and his team have used a technique they developed during the last years to map our local group of galaxies and all of the surrounding extragalactic void. Data for our closest 18.000 galaxies were used to produce the maps.
The Algorithm and dataprocessing used, actually computes galaxy densities over vast areas of space and the results are followed by a geometry generation algorithm that produces contours of density.
His team also studies the vectors by which galaxies move around us and the resulting work gives us for the first time a new perspective of our “local” space movement over the course of millions of years.
